Lucy took her time as she walked along the path back to the Pineapple Hotel & Spa’s main entrance, where Kai was working.

She took the time to call Officer Maude Staley, and give her the number for Jack Carter in Hazelwood, hoping they could make the arrangements for an independent testing for the bloody rags sample.

Then, she took some zen moments, walking down the path. She looked up at the amazing Hawaiian sky, felt the warm breeze through her hair, and simply enjoyed the smell of the ocean that was not far away. She listened to the sounds of the birds and the surf, and felt so lucky to be in Hawaii with Nick. She entered the lobby, and saw Kai working as the desk clerk. Kai immediately saw her, and nervously smiled.

“Kai, do you have a minute?” Lucy asked.

"Yes, but if you need anything from the hotel, give me ten minutes and I can get you what you want. I apologize, but we’re short-staffed because of Sunny’s unfortunate situation,” Kai said.

“No, it's not hotel-related. Well, in a way it is. Can you verify that Sunny was at her desk the night Mr. Trophy was killed? The coroner says Mr. Trophy died between six and a quarter past seven. I know the two of you were friendly since you were helping with her daughters the other day. You probably spoke.”

Kai slowly shook his head. “I know I was here because my shift runs from four to eleven-thirty. All my calls would have been recorded, so my whereabouts can be verified. Sunny is a burst of positive energy and she’d be hard to miss if she was twenty feet away from me. She usually stays late to prepare for the following day, but I didn’t notice her that night.”

“This is of the highest importance. Are you sure?” Lucy asked. “Is there any chance you saw her in passing and didn’t talk to her?”

“She could have been there and I missed her, but that’s highly doubtful,” Kai said. “If there’s nothing else, Mrs. Jenks, I have to clock in.”

“Thank you and if you think of anything, please be in touch. I’m sure you agree that there was no way Sunny had anything to do with this,” Lucy said.

“It’s hard to believe, but the bloody bed sheets are damning evidence against her.”

Lucy walked away, but before she got very far, she stopped to peruse the rack of travel brochures. There were a lot of beachfront hula lessons, and she knew she’d get Nick in a grass skirt eventually. She looked up when she heard a squeal of delight.

Kai was giving a woman Lucy recognized a big hug and whispered something in her ear The woman was Lizzie Trophy, and her demeanor was odd considering she was in Kailua to collect her husband’s remains. Soon after their greeting, their looks changed and they were appropriately somber.

Lucy was confused and couldn’t wait to share the information with the others. She had no idea what it meant, but would rely on Ava and Grace to help her out.
